DIABETIC RETINOPATHY

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a particularly common cause of blindness worldwide.

It is called angiopathy and it depends on the inadequate or insufficient regulation of diabetes and on the length and type of diabetes combined with the patient’s vascular resistance.

The DR from the moment of initiation will generally show an evolutionary course, which may be halted or delayed only by applying the Argon Laser to the retina.

There are no early symptoms for this, and every diabetic should be examined at regular intervals by his ophthalmologist. An early diagnosis and application of Argon Laser can significantly suspend the progression of the disease and return unobstructed vision to the patient for a long time.

If the DR is diagnosed, direct fluo-angiography is recommended to determine the severity of the disease and, direct laser application or waiting and re-check within a short period is advised.

Patients should be aware that if they do not carefully regulate their blood sugar level, then the prognosis of DR is not good, regardless of the laser treatment applied.
